In 1982 when I worked as a nurse on the inpatient oncology unit at the Oregon Health Sciences University, nausea and pain were two of the major symptoms we were attempting to manage with limited to moderate success.
As nurses we administered chemotherapy, blood transfusions and supported cancer patients addressing their cancer pain and the side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea, vomiting, opportunistic fungal infections, loss of appetite, tiredness, hair loss etc.
Along with the many drugs available for mitigating nausea and appetite loss we also had smokable marijuana “joints'' alongside pain killers in the locked narcotics drawer.
OHSU was one of the first research centers investigating the benefits of marijuana for managing nausea and appetite loss in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
The marijuana study was only for chemotherapy related nausea symptoms. For pain we used the pharma drugs Tylenol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen in combination with the usual opioid medications.
Forty-one years later American Nursing Association now officially recognizes Cannabis Nursing as a specialty nursing practice like Adult Gerontology, Cardiac Vascular Nursing, Pain Management, Mental Health and more.
Cannabis Nursing is now identified by the American Cannabis Nurses Association as a specialty nursing practice focused on the care of health care consumers seeking education and guidance in the therapeutic use of cannabis.
This comes after the 2022 The National Academy of Sciences research summary stating that there is conclusive evidence that cannabis or cannabinoids are effective for treatment of chronic pain in adults:
“Cannabis has been shown to be effective at reducing inflammation, modulating pain, boosting opioid analgesic effects, resulting in opioid sparing and shifting the dysphoria associated with pain.”
The recognition of Cannabis Nursing as a specialty nursing practice in the therapeutic use of cannabis will accelerate the research and application of cannabis medicine and increase access and quality of life for cancer patients as well as for veterans with complex traumatic war injuries, patients with movement disorders, spinal cord injuries and many other chronic conditions.
